The Story of ROMA: From Craftsmanship to Artistic Expression
Born in Montpellier, France, to Italian parents, Romain Garzonnio embarked on a journey of artistic discovery when he moved to Rome at the age of 25. Immersed in the city's rich history and art, he found inspiration in its Renaissance and classical heritage. Originally trained as a plaster craftsman, he gradually transformed his expertise into a unique artistic language that blends textures, materials, and emotions.
For the past seven years, ROMA has called Cambodia home, where he has found both tranquility and inspiration. Deeply connected to Khmer culture, he embraces the country as a space for introspection and creative growth. His artistic practice is rooted in the idea of memory and transmission, exploring the impact of past experiences on the subconscious.
An Exploration of the Subconscious
"ROMA - Subconscious Square Roots" delves into the realm of memory, perception, and timelessness. The exhibition features 38 works, including 27 paintings, 5 sculptures, 3 photographs, and 3 drawings, all created instinctively. ROMA’s work captures the blurred lines of recollections and the passage of time, with a particular focus on abstract time capsules—sculptures that enclose everyday objects, preserving them for future discovery.
This exhibition marks ROMA’s debut on the global art scene, as his first-ever solo exhibition. It also serves as the launch of his world tour, which will take him next to Spain and France.
A Thoughtful, Introspective Creative Process
Working in solitude, ROMA sees isolation as essential to his creative process. “Solitude is a way to understand oneself better—it untangles emotions and allows for deeper artistic exploration,” he explains. His work does not seek conventional beauty but rather an intemporal essence, reflecting emotions and experiences that transcend time.
“Through this exhibition, I share fragments of my subconscious—memories, emotions, and visions that shape my artistic journey. Each piece is an invitation for viewers to connect with their own interpretations and reflections.” — ROMA
