ROSEWOOD LONDON’S MIRROR ROOM LAUNCHES A NEW ART AFTERNOON TEA AS A LIVE COLLABORATION WITH ARTIST JOHN BOOTH
May 29, 2024
On Wednesday 29th May, Rosewood London’s Mirror Room launches ‘Art Afternoon Tea, The John Booth Collection’, a new offering bringing two notable artists together, combining their separate visions for the first time.
Noted multidisciplinary London-based artist John Booth with work previously featured in the windows of Selfridges, Paul Smith and the Conran Shop, and clients including Fendi and Sunspel, has worked closely with Executive Pastry Chef Mark Perkins to create a new vision for the iconic Mirror Room’s ‘Art Afternoon Tea’ series (established in 2017). Following spending time in Booth’s studio, Perkins worked with him to handcraft a series of cakes created to evoke joy, using bold prints and bright colours, drawing on both their histories of craftsmanship and innovation. An entirely co-created menu, both artists swapped creative roles to allow insight into one another's processes, with Perkins taking charge of sketches whilst Booth tasted flavours and ingredients.
Booth’s experience of work in design for fashion, installations, ceramics, and homeware has been translated into the menu, brimming with artistic expression. The storytelling behind each cake also provides intimate insight into Booth’s personal life. Guests can expect three cakes including ‘The Twins’, inspired by his experience as a twin, a two-sided cake reminiscent of a sticky toffee pudding and paying homage to his Cumbrian roots and combining chocolate date sponge, sable biscuit, praline crunch and vanilla custard surrounding a pink and yellow flower.
The second is ‘The Painter’s Palette’, made with vanilla cheesecake, pink sponge and raspberry jelly to represent the bright brush strokes of a paintbrush, sat atop a base of crispy biscuit, indicative of an artist's palette.
The third in the collection is the ‘Tropical Tulip’, a cake evoking the iconic tulip motif present throughout Booth’s portfolio. The purple and pink coloured cake combines mango mousse, orange passionfruit jelly and pistachio sponge, on a base of chocolate sablé biscuit.
Commenting on the live collaboration, Booth says “It’s so exciting working with Rosewood London and Chef Mark Perkins, as we’ve mixed bold colours, flavours and textures to evoke a feeling of joy and playfulness. We are bringing this new sense of craftsmanship and live collaboration to the iconic Art Afternoon Tea in the Mirror Room. For myself and Chef Mark Perkins, it has been about putting our personal energy and expression into cakes that you want to admire and taste, whilst really experimenting with our creativity together.’
The Art Afternoon Tea, The John Booth Collection is available from Wednesday 29th May from Mondays to Sundays from 12.00 p.m. to 5.45 p.m. and is priced at £75 per person, with a bespoke retail collection repurposing old tableware and linen also in the pipeline.
