ROSEWOOD LONDON TO SHOWCASE ‘GIVE’ BY ARTIST LORENZO QUINN
October 01, 2022
Rosewood London welcomes the iconic sculpture GIVE, by Lorenzo Quinn, during this year’s Frieze Art Fair. A contemporary Italian artist, Quinn is a world-renowned sculptor, particularly noted for his deft use of hands to convey authentic emotions and abstract concepts such as love and faith. Created from resin fibre, this exemplary art installation will call the hotel’s courtyard home for the duration of the month.
GIVE depicts cupped hands holding a still-growing olive tree, representing how ‘we live in a precarious balance with nature, which needs our protection and nourishment.’ The residency of the piece will further cement Rosewood London as an art destination, offering the opportunity to experience art in a spectacular setting for free, similar to that of Quinn’s 2019 installation during Venice Biennale, Building Bridges, which is composed of six pairs of monumental hands, individually titled ‘Friendship’, ‘Faith’, ‘Help’, ‘Love’, ‘Hope’ and ‘Wisdom’, aligning with his continual message of world unity.
Having exhibited internationally, from Saudi Arabia, Spain and Italy to India, Greece and the US, Quinn is best known for his expressive recreations of human hands. "I wanted to sculpt what is considered the hardest and most technically challenging part of the human body," he asserts. ‘The hand holds so much power – the power to love, to hate, to create, to destroy.’ In July 2021 Quinn’s latest sculpture, Together, was unveiled in Cannes, France before being shown in the Forever is Now exhibition in Egypt, the first contemporary art event to be held at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Giza pyramids.
In celebration of Quinn’s installation, the hotel’s own Executive Pastry Chef Mark Perkins has created a bespoke olive cake dessert inspired by the sculpture and olive tree that sits within the hands, as an addition to Rosewood London’s iconic Art Afternoon Tea. Consisting of vanilla mousse, pistachio and olive oil cake, the intricate dessert is served on a hand of porcelain, a unique nod to its inspiration. Throughout Frieze and the month of October guests simply looking to experience the artwork are welcomed to visit the Mirror Room, where they can enjoy a glass of Ruinart champagne alongside the delicate cake after taking in the spectacle. Upon departure, guests will be presented with a poem that accompanies the art piece as a memento, which will also be offered as a turn-down gift for those staying at the hotel during its tenure.
'Give and expect nothing in return, the rewards will be immense.
Humanity is at a turning point, we live in a precarious balance
with nature, which needs our protection and nourishment,
and in turn, nature will reward us.' - Lorenzo Quinn
GIVE will be at Rosewood London until 31st October 2022.
