Iconic Cubist and Pop Art Works Inspire Rosewood London's Newest Afternoon Tea
July 29, 2018
Rosewood London is thrilled to announce the return of its award-winning Art Afternoon Tea, launching once more within its iconic Mirror Room on 1st August. Executive Pastry Chef Mark Perkins - who is quickly establishing himself as the master of art-inspired creations following the success of Mirror Room’s first Art Afternoon Tea and most recently the Rodin Afternoon Tea - has on this occasion drawn inspiration from the distinctive styles of Cubism and Pop Art.
Cubism is an abstract artistic style pioneered by Pablo Picasso in the early 1900s. It is one of the aesthetics that later inspired iconic artists such as Andy Warhol in the 1950s, who initiated the hugely popular Pop Art movement. Guests will be taken on a culinary journey through these renowned styles, sampling a selection of six expertly made pastries inspired by the artists that popularised them.
Mark Perkins says:
“For this afternoon tea, I did a lot of research around the Cubist and Pop Art movements, in order to encapsulate them in the most interesting way possible. Creating edible versions of the abstract forms of Cubism, and disguising cakes as Warhol’s soup cans, was both challenging and fun, allowing me to experiment with various shapes and colours. We look forward to serving our guests something they may have never seen before and will hopefully enjoy eating!”
Cubism
Three classic pastries, based on traditional cooking techniques and flavours, have been inspired by the abstract shapes and forms of the Cubist style.
Pop Art
Perkins has taken the colourful aesthetics of the Pop Art style and translated them into three pastries, each inspired by some of the movement’s most well-known artists.
Alongside the colourful creations, guests will enjoy elements of a traditional British afternoon tea. A selection of delicate finger sandwiches containing fillings of the freshest ingredients – including corn-fed chicken and tarragon mayonnaise on basil bread; Kentish egg mayonnaise and truffle on caramelised onion bread; cucumber and cream cheese on heritage wheat bread; and an open-faced Scottish smoked salmon, capers pickled shallots and keta caviar - will be served to start. Diners will also be able to choose from a wide selection of Mariage Frères teas to complement their meal.
Guests will also be able to opt for a special afternoon tea offering, enjoying a glass of Dom Pérignon Champagne and a freshly made amuse bouche of English cucumber jelly, Kentish tomato consommé and a basil and tomato cracker, which will be created in front of them at the table. The Art Afternoon Tea is available from Wednesday 1st August, Monday to Friday 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday & Sunday, 12:00 noon to 5:30 p.m. It is priced at £58 per person, and the Dom Pérignon afternoon tea is priced at £92 per person. A R de Ruinart afternoon tea is also available for £68 per person, and Ruinart Rosé afternoon tea for £73.
