PRESS RELEASE
This preeminent Bahamian artist and curator invites guests to immerse themselves in local culture through highly curated experiential programming
March 30, 2022
NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS -- March 30, 2022-- Rosewood Baha Mar, set on the gorgeous white sand of Nassau’s Cable Beach, is pleased to introduce John Cox, as the property’s inaugural Rosewood PlaceMaker. The latest extension of the brand’s guiding A Sense of Place™ philosophy, wherein each property is designed to immerse guests in the destination, the PlaceMakers program taps the beacons of Rosewood’s communities to harness local culture through bespoke experiences and promote an authentic feeling of affinity and belonging.
As the PlaceMaker for Rosewood Baha Mar, John Cox has developed unique activations and programming, digital journeys of discovery and an expertly curated destination guide, each of which is rooted in his passion for storytelling through art while simultaneously highlighting the essential elements and traits of the destination of The Bahamas.
“John Cox is one of the most influential people in the Bahamian arts scene and a conduit in bringing our community of artists together across generations. His ability to enhance the guest experience by the power of storytelling and sharing the island’s rich culture through art creates a sense of place in its purest form. Guests can discover more than 100 original pieces of art including John’s throughout our resort,” says Luigi Romaniello, managing director of Rosewood Baha Mar.
As part of the PlaceMaker’s programming, a variety of immersive experiences are available for resort guests:
Hussey’s Tropical Wonder Art Tour
Guests learn about local artists and engage with fellow travelers who share an interest in the arts. Participants gather in the rotunda of the resort’s Manor Bar before embarking on a guided art tour which includes a printmaking activating and sipping champagne in Café Boulud while discussing the works on display within the restaurant.
Current Art Gallery Sip and Paint Experience
Those guests who wish to tap into their inner artist can enjoy an exclusive painting class guided by John Cox or one of the artists in residence at the Current Art Gallery. Wine will be served while guests create masterpieces at their individual easels.
“Inspired By Talks” in The Library
Quarterly salon-style talks focusing on diverse topics about design, business and the arts will be hosted by John Cox and Royann Dean, a local creative economy advocate in Rosewood’s Library Lounge. The goal is to bring a cross section of creatives together to spark inspiration and collaboration. These discussions are open to the artist community as well as resort guests.
Black Gloves Suite Series - A Collection of Private Open House Art Installations
The Black Gloves Suite nestled on the ninth floor with sweeping ocean views houses a vibrant, diverse collection of artwork by a group of artists called 11 Strong. Curated by John Cox, this art-inspired specialty suite not only provides a platform for these Bahamian artists to showcase their art in a dynamic space, but illustrates the breadth of the curatorial services of the Current Art Gallery at Baha Mar.
Local art enthusiasts and resort guests can view and purchase the art by private appointment. Over the course of the year, the collections will change quarterly and feature the artwork of the artists from 11 Strong: Lillian Blades, Toby Lunn, Richardo Barrett, Averia Wright, John Paul Saddleton, Samantha Treco, Dylan Rapillard, Sue Katz, Dede Brown, Kachelle Knowles and Jason Bennett.
“My goal is to shepherd the local cultural community and create paths and platforms for emerging and established artists and bring awareness to the complexity and diverse range of artistic practices to Rosewood Baha Mar. When guests take the Hussey’s Tropical Wonder Art Tour at Rosewood or walk the Fairwind Exhibition it should spark a curiosity to explore the history of the country through the lens of the artists from, working in and inspired by The Bahamas,” says John Cox.
Additionally, a short film called A Window Into The Soul debuted as part of the PlaceMaker campaign. Narrated by Cox, it will be shown in conjunction with his curated art exhibitions in The Bahamas, New York City, and Miami throughout 2022.
