Laura Vinci
(1962– ) Born in São Paulo. Lives and works in São Paulo.
Known for her sculptures, large installations, and site-specific interventions, Laura Vinci is a multimedia artist, set designer, and art director.
She graduated in Fine Arts from Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (FAAP) and obtained a master's degree from the School of Communications and Arts at the University of São Paulo (ECA–USP). Laura Vinci began her artistic career in the early 1990s.
Her research is based on the relationships between body and space, with an emphasis on ephemerality. In her practice, space emerges as a complex organism, mediating the relationships between the various bodies that compose it, while remaining susceptible to the passage of time. Her proposals aim to investigate the processes of material alteration, highlighting the transience of the elements that occupy a specific location, as well as encouraging the public to have new perceptions about the environment around them.
For Rosewood São Paulo, Vinci created a special series for the corridors of the 5th floor. She collected leaves and branches from the gardens of the Maternidade Matarazzo before construction work began at the site. She then produced replicas of the leaves and branches suspended in the air by fine chains, using gold as a finish, giving the impression that they are all floating in the air. Laura transformed the place into a very poetic environment. Her creation makes us dream as we walk through the corridors that lead to the 5th-floor rooms.
Laura Vinci describes her work:
"The version of 'Folhas Avulsas' installed in the former maternity building, now part of Cidade Matarazzo and Rosewood São Paulo, was specially designed to occupy the 5th floor of the building. I chose one of the trees that belong to the original garden of the maternity to reproduce - in gold-plated cast brass - its leaves and small branches. Occupying the three long corridors that give access to the hotel rooms, I installed over 100 leaves and some branches hanging from small chains directly attached to the building's ceiling. The idea was to bring a delicate version of the lush vegetation that is part of the entire complex into the space. A provocation about the importance of creating paradigms about our relationship with nature. The 'Folhas Avulsas' are like relics of a future for me."
