Laura Miranda
(1958 – Curitiba) Lives and works in Curitiba.
She is a visual artist and performer, with a degree in Painting and a postgraduate degree in 20th-Century Art History from the School of Music and Fine Arts of Paraná. Her training includes dance (Nikolais/Louis Foundation for Dance) with Rocio Infante; Somatic Education (Alexander Technique) with Joel Kendall; and Somatic Experiencing (a psychobiological approach to trauma) with Peter Levine. Her practice in Ki Aikidô (a Japanese martial art), since 2004, is also part of the set of disciplines that underpin her work and shape her understanding of the body.
The work presented at Rosewood São Paulo was developed in the Passaúna Environmental Protection Area (APA), on the outskirts of Curitiba (PR), where the artist lives and works. This region received Italian and Polish immigrants in the 19th century. The “Shoes” series – 2006 – was created using leftover fabrics from garments worn by the artist’s ancestors, molded over wooden and leather clogs used by the immigrants. These pieces carry references to the geography of the body itself, transformed by journeys across continents in search of new territories. Their prints, textures, transparencies, and designs evoke the idea of skin tattooed by the experience of encounters with the other — the different, the distant.
The “Lichens” series – 2013/17 – presents a collection of laser-cut drawings and a video performance created in collaboration with artist Mônica Infante. It was filmed in a remote creek within the forest, and the immersion in this setting shaped both the conceptual approach and the scenic landscape of the work. The connection with the animal, vegetal, and mineral kingdoms was marked by dyeing the waters with biodegradable substances in white, indigo blue, and gold, respectively. The extended presence in the riverbed allowed for transformations in bodily states as the artist was traversed by the flows of the environment. The notion of symbiosis between algae and fungi — the origin of lichens — embodies a relationship of protection and nourishment, and was the guiding concept chosen for the piece.
Mônica Infante was born in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, in 1964. She is a dancer with a degree in Dance from the London Studio Centre, Middlesex University, London, and from the Royal Academy of Dancing, London, England. She is certified in Somatic Experiencing (a psychobiological approach to trauma) with Peter Levine. She has practiced Ki Aikidô (a Japanese martial art) since 1996. Her research in contemporary dance began with the founding of Tempo Dance Company alongside Rocio Infante and Laura Miranda. She currently works as a teacher and performer.
