Cristiano Mascaro
(1944– ) Born in Catanduva. Lives and works in São Paulo.
Graduated from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of São Paulo, he began his professional career as a photojournalist for Veja magazine, where he produced Audiovisuals for FAUUSP. In 1986, he obtained his master’s degree, and in 1995, he earned his Doctorate from USP. In 2006, he participated as an honored architect in the 6th International Biennial of Architecture and Design, and in 2007, he received the Special Porto Seguro Photography Award for his body of work. In 2015, he was awarded the "Urban Narratives" prize by the São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA).
He was primarily a street photographer, with no studio, walking along sidewalks to capture the daily life of cities. It is a vast universe, and in this way, he found the Hospital Matarazzo, which represents well the development of large cities that are constantly transforming.
His first contact with Alexandre Allard occurred in 2013, when he was invited to document the Hospital Matarazzo complex, including the Maternidade Condessa Filomena Matarazzo and its annexes, as they were at that time, and continue to follow the development of the Cidade Matarazzo Project.
Later, when he was invited to exhibit 20 photographs in one of the corridors of the Rosewood Hotel, his choice could only be a selection of photos taken over 10 years, capturing the many stages of the evolution of the Cidade Matarazzo project. During this period, he lived amidst environments marked by the passage of time, almost in ruins, while others were completely different, with excavators, cranes, iron frames, concrete slabs being poured, pillars being planted, and many people working. Concerned with this visually chaotic and challenging-to-control scenery, he chose to focus on multifaceted details that artistically represented the universe of a grand work in motion.
