Cabelo is a renowned visual artist and musician. Drawing, painting, sculpture, and performance are the mediums employed by the artist who, throughout his career, was strongly influenced by urban aesthetics, choosing to use bold lines and colors while addressing abstract and metaphysical issues. Cabelo has showcased his works in solo exhibitions worldwide, and among other significant art displays, was selected for the 1997 Documenta in Kassel.
For Rosewood São Paulo, Cabelo created a fresco on the ceiling of the Rabo di Galo bar. The artist's creative process took 68 hours of unconscious workflow, blurring the lines between calligraphy and drawing. Cabelo conveyed Amerindian nature and expression by representing the serpent, an animal present in various original peoples' mythologies. The "boa constrictor" (a large, non-venomous snake, akin to the boa) is considered by the Huni Kuin of the Amazon as "the mother" of their people. Inspired by "mirações" (visions in Ayahuasca rituals), Cabelo presents these images in reference to the cosmic experience, with lines and colors that honor the artistic expression of the tribes and peoples of the region.
The artist reveals more about his work at Rabo di Galo:
"The idea was to create a dark gold ceiling/dome that evoked the cosmic origin and the transcendent, even sacred, atmosphere that music brings us. I chose to use only two colors since the environment is sober. Some anthropomorphic elements (or characters) have their arms raised, throwing bolts or snakes, indicating this cosmic connection of inspiration, improvisation, and creative flow of the musician. And the simplicity of their forms evokes Africa, the ancestral origins."
Cabelo presents himself as "a horse of the world." The artist sees himself as a vessel for poetry and reveals:
"To start, I don't belong. And under such condition, I am much more a 'what' than a 'who'. What they call Cabelo is not just one, but many, like the hairs that grow on the head. Entities and energies — acting together or separately — possess me, like one or two soccer teams. The combination of these forces guides the body. This kind of spaceship or octopus, which we call an "agoramobile," dives into different densities, navigating in the moment. Thus goes the arrow. Throughout its course, its crew, its tentacles, collect what they find and lay it on deck: to present the catch of the day in the bedless stream."
