Time to take the slow road. Set off into the mountains in the comfort of our Rosewood vehicle, climbing to approximately 700m for an entrancing glance at the bucolic panorama of the valley below. This thirty-minute drive leads to Long Lao, a Khmu and Hmong village where today’s somewhat challenging trek begins. Walk over forested hills and through enchanting villages past women weavers, farmers cutting sugar cane, school children making toys from tree branches and a seemingly endless procession of kaleidoscopic butterflies towards the spring the feeds Kuang Si Waterfall.
At the three-hour mark, just before you arrive at Kuang Si, detour into a dark, mysterious grotto tucked into the limestone hillside. Laotians hid here during the war, alongside the carved wooden statues of the Buddha still poised on natural niches within this nameless cave. Continue onward in the sunlight then, like the locals, dive under the gushing waterfall to cool off on arrival.
