Embracing Spiritual Reflection
Boun Khao Phansa marks the beginning of the Buddhist Lent, a sacred three-month period during which monks devote themselves to prayer, meditation, and spiritual reflection. During this time, monks are required to stay within their monasteries and are prohibited from spending nights outside their designated temples.
On the morning of Boun Khao Phansa, devotees prepare offerings of food and essentials for the monks. Other donations include necessities such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and towels. Temples bustle with activity as people make merit, listen to Buddhist teachings, and reflect on the importance of spiritual growth.
In the evening, monks share teachings from Buddha and recount the significance of Buddhist Lent. Traditionally, monks and novices cannot leave their monasteries to become laypeople during this time, and laypeople often avoid marriage until the conclusion of Lent, known as Boun Ork Phansa.
