Press Release
August 27, 2024
Kauri Cliffs Golf Course, one of the world’s premier golfing destinations, is set to undergo a comprehensive fairway renovation aimed at promoting sustainability and adapting to evolving climate conditions. This initiative comes in response to changing weather patterns and recent large-scale weather events in New Zealand, including Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023, which have significantly impacted the local environment.
These changing weather patterns have introduced challenges such as increased overnight temperatures that elevate the risk of turf diseases and prolonged droughts threatening fairway conditions.
“As custodians of our land, we are dedicated to ensuring that Kauri Cliffs remains one of the world’s most outstanding golf experiences while managing our resources sustainably,” said Ray Geffre, Director of Golf at Kauri Cliffs Golf Course.
The planned renovation involves transitioning all fairways from the current perennial rye grass, a cool-season variety, to Bermuda grass—commonly referred to as Cooch grass in Australia and New Zealand. This warm-season grass is better suited to withstand the region's shifting climate conditions and will significantly reduce the water and chemical inputs required to maintain high-quality playing conditions, aligning with the course's long-term environmental sustainability goals. The renovation project is scheduled to commence in October 2025.
As a result of the renovation, Kauri Cliffs Golf Course will be closed to outside play from October 7, 2025, until December 8, 2025.
“We want to assure our patrons that the decision to renovate is not based on the current condition of the golf course. Kauri Cliffs remains in excellent shape this winter, and we anticipate maintaining this standard until the renovation begins,” added Mr. Geffre.
The Kauri Cliffs Golf Course team is available to assist guests with adjusting any disrupted travel plans and address any questions regarding the renovation. Patrons are encouraged to contact the team with their preferred alternative dates and any inquiries they may have.
“We greatly appreciate the patience and understanding of our guests as we undertake this essential upgrade. We look forward to a successful summer season in 2024-2025 and to welcoming everyone back to a revitalized Kauri Cliffs Golf Course,” concluded Mr. Geffre.
