About
Located on the Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawai`i, Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort draws upon centuries of preserved culture and tradition to deliver a distinctly Hawaiian experience. Spanning 81 acres of stunning geologic landscape and historical richness, the reimagined classic channels inspiration from the land’s illustrious legacy, local sensibilities, and natural elements to illuminate the ancient Ka’upulehu’s past, present, and future.
Many elements of the property have not only been carefully curated to celebrate the quintessential elements of the original Kona Village but to also demonstrate an appreciation for the heritage of its one-of-a-kind location. Across the property design elements, physical structures, and cultural sites have been preserved to be enjoyed by future generations. A dedicated cultural center further provides both visitors and locals with perspective into the rich natural and cultural significance of the surroundings.
History & Heritage
This sacred land surrounding Kahuwai Bay has lived many lives spanning centuries, from the very first Polynesian settlers to reach Hawai`i to the second wave of Polynesian settlers who established Ka`ūpūlehu as a thriving ahupua`a (land division). Living lightly on the land, they traded fish and salt for goods from upland villagers, creating foundational, sustainable practices to mindfully pass down through generations.
By 1939, Ka’ūpūlehu was no longer a lively fishing village, but a quiet enclave filled with memories of the past—until The New Moon discovered its deserted shores. In 1965, Johnno Jackson and his wife, Helen, arrived at the abandoned village after sailing much of the South Pacific on their schooner. With a lofty dream and unwavering spirit, they established the Kona Village Resort, creating traditions that are still remembered and revered to this day.
For the next five decades, Kona Village welcomed guests from all over the world, never losing its beating heart. Families would return year after year, eager to rejoin in beloved traditions and reconnect with the staff, who now felt like ‘ohana (family).
Then, in March of 2011, an earthquake off the coast of Japan sent a tsunami across the Pacific Ocean, and Kona Village was swept away. For over a decade, the land sat in deep stillness. In 2023, Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort once again opened its doors after seven years of development to welcome guests back to enjoy its unique spirit and offering.
History Through Holistic Storytelling
The origins of the resort along with the Hawaiian culture are evident throughout the resort in a multitude of ways. Through the comprehensive food & beverage program, the team has looked to the island’s community to source their ingredients and practice time-honored preparation methods to offer menus of inspired cuisine and classics. The resort’s design, both exterior and interior, takes inspiration from the concepts of journey, ‘ohana, and cultural heritage. Elements of the land such as wood, stone, and woven materials are incorporated into the overarching design theme, as well as archival images hung on the walls and showcasing moments of the island and village’s history and past lives. Through a diverse outdoor recreational program, guests can partake in activities that are both enjoyed presently in Hawai`i as well as dating back to activities of indigenous Hawaiians, including Hawaiian canoe paddling, paddle boarding, and snorkeling.
To continue the education and immersion into Hawaiian culture, an on-site cultural center will provide both guests and locals alike a perspective into the natural and cultural significance of their surroundings. Small touchpoints throughout the guest experience help tell the story of the local culture and heritage such as meaningful turndown amenities and weekly lūʻau. Along with the center will be a Rosewood Explorers Club, locally named the Keiki Club, offering the younger guests locally immersive activities giving a taste of Hawaiian culture such as hula dance classes, ukulele lessons, lava field tours, and beach and wildlife walks.
